Assistantship references: submission is a separate task

Track two submissions

Completing your own application does not necessarily complete the recruitment file. The British Council’s English Language Assistant lifecycle guidance says the nominated referee receives an online form after submission. The reference must be submitted through that link, rather than by email, and responsibility for timely submission remains with the applicant.

This is an original process explainer checked on 7 November 2026. It does not announce that the next intake has opened or supply a new deadline. Use the current intake’s application page for those details; do not reuse a deadline from a previous academic year.

Make the handover explicit

TeachAtlas suggests asking the proposed referee whether they can complete the reference before entering their details. Check their email address directly, explain the intended role and give them the official instructions. Agree a sensible reminder date so that a missing invitation can be investigated while there is still time.

Keep a small tracking record with the application submission date, the referee’s acknowledgement and the status shown in the official system. Do not ask for the referee’s account access or try to submit their assessment yourself. A reference should remain the referee’s own evidence.

Understand what the next stage means

The programme distinguishes assessment, shortlisting and allocation by overseas partners. Its guidance also describes provisional offers and further checks. Being shortlisted should therefore not be recorded in your relocation plan as a confirmed job with a final school address.

Keep qualification evidence and passport or work-permission enquiries separate from the reference. A strong recommendation does not settle a destination’s eligibility requirements. An assistantship is also a particular teaching pathway, not automatic qualification for a full school-teacher post.

Use evidence you can explain

For your own preparation, list a few real examples of adapting to unfamiliar situations, working with learners and understanding the destination. Record what you did and what you learned. This creates useful material for an application or interview without asking a referee to endorse claims they cannot substantiate.

Before making non-refundable arrangements, check what remains provisional. Your practical objective is a complete, accurate application and a clear understanding of the next decision, rather than merely a form marked submitted.
