Understand what the qualification prepares you for

Trinity’s CertTESOL is an initial English-language teaching qualification suitable for people with little or no teaching experience. This is a practical explainer, not an announcement of a new course or an endorsement of a training centre.

The official qualification page lists Level 5, 200 hours of total qualification time, at least 130 guided learning hours and at least six hours of teaching practice with real learners. Those measures describe different parts of the workload; they should not be treated as interchangeable totals.

Check the centre as well as the certificate

Trinity delivers the qualification through validated providers. Its minimum entry expectations include age 18 and education sufficient for higher-education entry; individual centres may impose additional conditions. English need not be your first language, but strong English skills are required. Providers set fees, with a moderation charge also described in Trinity’s guidance.

TeachAtlas suggests asking for one written quotation covering tuition, moderation, materials and any reassessment charges. Put the live timetable beside your existing commitments. Ask when teaching practice takes place, how feedback is delivered and how much preparation is expected between sessions. Those answers help you compare feasible courses rather than simply choosing the shortest advertised duration.

Keep admission and employment separate

A centre’s willingness to admit you answers a training question. Before paying, choose two realistic target roles and ask each employer about the precise qualification and delivery format. Separately check the destination’s passport, degree and work-permission rules. Do not infer permission to work from a course acceptance email.

For example, a non-graduate might meet a course’s education threshold while still needing to investigate a target job’s degree condition. A qualified school teacher might instead be seeking specialist language-teaching development. Write down which problem this course is meant to solve for you.

Make a decision you can revisit

Keep the centre’s validation details, timetable, full quote and cancellation terms with your notes on target jobs. Mark unanswered questions as unresolved. The qualifications guide can help organise your comparison, but no course purchase should be treated as a guaranteed job, professional registration or visa.
