Check validity against the intended journey

A passport’s printed expiry date is only the starting point. HM Passport Office’s renewal guidance says the remaining validity needed depends on the destination. It directs travellers to the country’s entry requirements. This explainer does not apply a universal six-month rule or decide whether your particular passport is acceptable.

For a teaching move, write down the proposed entry date, placement end date and any planned trips during the stay. Then check the appropriate official entry and residence-permission instructions. A valid travel document is separate from permission to take employment.

Identify records that may need updating

TeachAtlas recommends listing every active process using your passport details: the teaching programme, employer, visa application and any booked travel. Ask each organisation how it handles renewal while an application is pending. Keep the answers with your application record.

Do not assume that a new passport number updates automatically across systems. Equally, do not withdraw a valid application simply because you expect renewal; ask the responsible organisation what action is necessary. The correct sequence depends on the process you are actually using.

Use the correct renewal route

The official UK renewal page lists the old passport among supporting documents and asks for valid passports from other countries, or the specified copies. It distinguishes renewal from lost, stolen or damaged passports and changes of personal details. Use the instructions that match your circumstances, including the appropriate overseas service if applying from abroad.

Keep teaching qualifications and nationality conditions visible as separate checks. A UK residence address does not make someone a British passport holder, and renewing a British passport does not remove a programme’s degree or training requirement.

Build time for a changed document

Before booking a tightly timed move, identify which steps require possession of the passport and which can proceed while renewal is being processed. Use the service’s current processing information rather than an old anecdote. Leave room to resolve an incorrect name, date or document requirement before departure.

If an existing visa is in an older passport, check both HM Passport Office guidance and the destination authority’s current instructions. Keep the old document where required rather than assuming it has no further use. The objective is a consistent set of valid records, not merely a recently issued passport.
