Welcome to TeachAtlas

Teaching abroad begins with an appealing idea. Turning it into a workable plan takes more: the right qualifications, a lawful work route, a realistic budget and a clear picture of everyday life.

I created TeachAtlas to bring those questions together for people in the UK. This monthly letter will help you find useful starting points, understand the trade-offs and decide what to investigate next. Your passport and circumstances matter more than a universal list of “best countries”.

Your November priority: choose a route before a destination

A language assistantship, a language-centre job and a professionally qualified school-teaching post are different opportunities. A short TEFL certificate does not automatically establish work eligibility, and UK residence is not the same as holding a British passport.

Start with the route finder, then read the exact programme or employer conditions. Its results are starting points to investigate, not visa decisions.

Three places to start exploring

  • Japan: a structured first step. Our October research identifies the UK JET assistant-language-teacher route for eligible British degree holders. TEFL and Japanese are not mandatory entry requirements for that route. Placement and working arrangements still matter: school holidays are not automatically your annual leave. Explore the Japan guide and official JET eligibility.
  • Spain: language immersion with a budget to test. The British Council assistant route does not require Spanish on entry. It is an assistantship with its own conditions, not an ordinary employment contract. Check your regional allowance, accommodation costs and cash for possible payment delays. Explore the Spain guide and official programme information.
  • Taiwan: keep the teaching pathways separate. Public-school English teaching and language-centre employment have different entry requirements and pay arrangements. Read the conditions for your exact role rather than treating a country-level salary as an offer. Compare the Taiwan pathways.

The number to look beyond: headline salary

In TeachAtlas’s October Graz assistantship model, a published €1,630 net monthly allowance leaves an illustrative €208 after the listed central-case living costs. The higher-cost case produces a €198 shortfall. This is a one-adult, private-one-bedroom example, not typical Austrian savings or a forecast for you.

Use the budget planner to test rent, food, transport, healthcare and the period before first pay. Keep deposits, travel and other moving costs separate, and count employer accommodation only once.

Before you apply: five practical checks

  1. Confirm the passport and work-permission route you will use.
  2. Match your exact qualifications and experience to the role.
  3. Ask for guaranteed paid hours, preparation duties and deductions.
  4. Check police, medical and document requirements before ordering them.
  5. Price housing and your arrival period; check family permissions separately.

Keep track with the preparation checklist. Visit TeachAtlas News for source-led updates, and read our research standards and sources whenever you want to check the basis of a claim.
